What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? A Practical Guide

Search engines no longer just list links. They answer questions directly in featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistant responses and AI Overviews. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content the source of those answers.
AEO, SEO and GEO: how they fit together
- SEO helps your pages rank in search results.
- AEO helps your content get selected as the direct answer to a question.
- GEO (generative engine optimization) helps AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude understand and cite your brand.
All three overlap. Good AEO usually improves SEO and GEO at the same time, because clear, well-structured answers are useful to people and machines alike.
Where answer engines show your content
- Featured snippets. The highlighted answer box at the top of Google.
- People Also Ask. Expandable related questions.
- Voice assistants. Spoken answers from smart speakers and phones.
- AI Overviews. Generated summaries that cite sources.
- AI chat assistants. Conversational answers that may link to sources.
How to optimize for answer engines
Find the questions people ask
Look at People Also Ask boxes, Search Console queries, customer emails and sales calls. Questions like “how much does…”, “how long does…”, “what is the difference between…” and “is it worth…” are especially valuable.
Use the question as a heading
Turn each question into an H2 or H3. This makes the structure obvious to search engines and readers.
Answer immediately
Write a direct answer of 40 to 60 words right under the heading. Then add detail, examples and nuance below. This “inverted pyramid” style is what answer engines prefer to quote.
Use lists and tables where they fit
Step-by-step processes work well as numbered lists, and comparisons work well as tables. Search engines often pull these formats directly into results.
Add structured data
FAQPage, HowTo where appropriate, Article, Organization and Product schema help machines understand your content. Structured data does not guarantee a featured answer, but it removes ambiguity.
Keep it accurate and current
Answer engines prefer trustworthy sources. Show the author, date and update history, cite sources for facts and update content when things change.
A quick AEO checklist
- Question-based headings
- A direct answer in the first one or two sentences
- Supporting detail, examples and visuals
- FAQ section with structured data
- Clear authorship and updated date
- Fast, mobile-friendly, crawlable pages
