Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): Get Cited by AI

Key takeawayGenerative engine optimization (GEO) makes your business easy for AI assistants to find, understand and cite. Its essentials are fast crawlable HTML, open access for AI crawlers, schema.org structured data, an llms.txt file, answer-first factual content and consistent brand information across the web.

More and more customers ask AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini and Claude for recommendations instead of scrolling through search results. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making sure your business shows up in those answers.

How is GEO different from SEO?

Traditional SEO aims to rank a page in a list of links. GEO aims to have AI systems understand your business as an entity and quote or cite your content in a generated answer. The two overlap heavily, and good SEO is the foundation of GEO, but GEO puts extra weight on clarity, facts and consistency.

The GEO checklist

  1. Allow AI crawlers. Make sure your robots.txt does not block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended.
  2. Serve real HTML. AI crawlers often do not run JavaScript, so your important content must be in the HTML itself.
  3. Add structured data. Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article and Person schema tell machines exactly who you are and what you do.
  4. Publish an llms.txt file. This is a short Markdown summary at /llms.txt that points AI systems to your most important pages.
  5. Write answer-first content. Start each page with a one or two sentence direct answer, then go into detail.
  6. Use question-style headings. Phrases like “What is…”, “How much…” and “How long…” match how people prompt AI.
  7. Be consistent everywhere. Your company name, description and contact details should match on your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, LinkedIn and directories.
  8. Show expertise. Add author bylines, real experience, dates and specific facts.
  9. Get mentioned. Reviews, directory listings, guest articles and press help AI systems trust your brand.

Yes. Several AI assistants rely on web search indexes such as Bing to find fresh information. Submitting your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools, not just Google Search Console, is one of the simplest GEO wins.

How to measure GEO results

GEO is newer than SEO, and measurement is still evolving, but you can track progress in a few practical ways:

  • Prompt testing. Keep a list of 10 to 20 questions your customers might ask an AI assistant, such as “best web developer for small businesses in Cebu”. Ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude every month, and record whether your brand is mentioned or cited.
  • AI referral traffic. In your analytics, watch for visits coming from AI tools such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com.
  • Branded search. When AI assistants mention you, people often search your name afterward, so rising branded searches in Search Console can be a signal.
  • Citations and mentions. Track where your business is listed and reviewed, because these sources feed what AI systems know about you.

Common GEO mistakes

  1. Blocking AI crawlers by accident through a security plugin or hosting firewall.
  2. Hiding key content in tabs, sliders or scripts that crawlers cannot read.
  3. Using vague marketing language instead of clear facts about what you do, where and for whom.
  4. Inconsistent business names, addresses or descriptions across platforms.
  5. Publishing thin, generic content that adds nothing new.
